Using your phone keyboard. Good for learning where keys are — not the same skill as touch typing.
Touch typing needs a keyboard

The whole point is your fingers learning positions without looking, which a touchscreen cannot teach. Practise on a computer — or plug a keyboard into this device and carry on here.

Word Rain, a free typing game

Words fall from the top of the field, and you type each one before it reaches the ground. Three words landed and the game is over. Every ten words you type out, the rain falls faster, comes more often and brings longer words, so a game lasts as long as your typing keeps up.

How to play

Press any key to start. The first letter you type picks the lowest falling word that starts with it, and a ring shows which one you are on; then type the rest of it. The letters you have typed change colour as you go, and the word disappears when it is done.

A wrong key counts as a mistake but leaves you on the same word. Backspace takes back a letter, and taking back the first one lets the word go, so you can switch to one that is closer to the ground. A space does nothing, so the habit of pressing it after a word costs you nothing. Esc pauses the game, and so does switching to another tab or opening the settings.

Scoring

Each word is worth ten points a character, times the level you are on, so long words late in a game are worth the most. Your best score is kept for each language and profile, with the level it reached, and shown above the field next time.

Speed and accuracy in the header are counted the way the rest of the site counts them: five characters to a word, with pauses longer than three seconds left out, so waiting for the next word to appear does not drag your speed down. The time you play counts towards your daily goal and appears on your progress page.

Why a game helps

Drills build accuracy; a game builds the habit of looking at the next word while your fingers finish the last one. Words arrive in an order you cannot predict, and the ones near the ground want typing first, which trains you to read ahead and to recover quickly from a slip. It is a good way to end a session of lessons with the keys still fresh.

Common questions

Which languages can I play in?

English, with everyday words, and Nepali and Hindi in the Preeti and Kruti Dev layouts, with words taken from the Nepali and Hindi stories. Choose the language from the menu at the top. Other languages play with the English words.

Can I play it on a phone?

The words need a keyboard to type them on. A phone keyboard can be switched on from the notice at the top of the page, but it covers much of the field; the game is at its best with a physical keyboard.

Where is my best score kept?

In this browser, for the profile you are using. Deleting a profile deletes its scores.

Does it cost anything?

No. The game is free to play as often as you like, with no account and no advertising.
