Using your phone keyboard. Good for learning where keys are — not the same skill as touch typing.
Touch typing needs a keyboard

The whole point is your fingers learning positions without looking, which a touchscreen cannot teach. Practise on a computer — or plug a keyboard into this device and carry on here.

Free typing practice

No passage and no target: type whatever you like and watch your speed as you go. The on-screen keyboard lights up each key as you press it, so this is also a quick way to see where a character lives on a layout.

When to use it

Warm up for a minute before a lesson or a test. Practise the things you actually type: your name and address, an email, the sentences that come up every day at work.

Or try out a layout. Choose Nepali or Hindi from the language menu and what you type is drawn in the Preeti or Kruti Dev font as you go, which makes it easy to check what each key produces.

Reading the numbers

Speed is in words per minute, five characters to a word, with pauses longer than three seconds left out. With no passage to follow there is nothing to get wrong, so accuracy stays at 100%. For a true accuracy figure, take the speed test or type a story.

Common questions

Is what I type saved or sent anywhere?

No. The text stays on the page and is gone when you leave. Only your speed is recorded, in this browser, for your progress page.

Why doesn’t the keyboard show which key comes next?

There is no passage, so there is no next key. To be guided key by key, use the lessons.

Does it work on a phone?

You can switch on the phone keyboard from the notice at the top of the page. Touch typing itself needs a physical keyboard.

Is it free?

Yes, and there is nothing to sign up for.
