Touch typing lessons

Fifty free lessons that teach the keyboard one row at a time. The on-screen keyboard lights up the next key and the hands show which finger presses it, so you learn where the keys are without looking down at them.

How the course is built

The lessons start on the middle row, the home row your fingers rest on, then add the top row, then the bottom row, and finish with the whole keyboard. Each lesson’s header says which row it trains. The Keyboard Row panel jumps straight to any stage, and the lesson menu to any lesson.

Each row has two sets of drills, labelled Paper 1 and Paper 2, and the lessons alternate between them so the same fingers are trained in more than one way.

While you type

A wrong key turns red and the lesson waits for the right one, so mistakes never pile up in the text. Backspace steps back a character. Your place is saved, so you can close the tab and carry on later.

Finishing a lesson shows your speed, accuracy and time against your best for that lesson. Your progress page keeps every session, ranks your weakest keys and fingers, and can build a short drill from the keys you keep missing.

Lessons in Nepali and Hindi

Choose Nepali or Hindi from the language menu and the same lessons are drawn in the Preeti or Kruti Dev font, with the keyboard labelled to match. Those layouts put the letters on an ordinary keyboard, so no special hardware is needed. The Nepali typing guide and Hindi typing guide explain how each layout works.

Getting the most out of them

Ten to fifteen minutes a day does more than an hour once a week. Keep your eyes on the screen, bring your fingers back to the home row after every key, and slow down when the red marks start. If you have never touch typed before, read how to touch type first: it shows which finger owns which key.

Common questions

Where should I start?

At lesson 1, even if you already type. Every other key is reached from the home row, and a few minutes there shows quickly whether your fingers know it.

How long does a lesson take?

At a beginner’s 20 words a minute, about ten minutes on average, and none much more than a quarter of an hour. You can stop part-way; your place is kept.

Why do some lessons look like random letters?

Some drills are written for the Preeti layout. In English they appear as the plain keys you press, which is all a key-position drill needs. Choose Nepali to see them drawn as Devanagari.

Do I need an account?

No. Your place, your bests and your history are kept in this browser, and the lessons are free with no ads.
